These towels, with a distinctive cotton weave and delightful knotted fringe, are embellished with traditional block printing by the Antica Stamperia Carpegna. The Antica Stamperia Carpegna is a historic workshop tucked away in the small village of Carpegna in the Marche region, not far from the regions of Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. The workshop is run by the talented young artist Emanuele Francioni, who belongs to the sixth generation to carry on the tradition of block printing unique to this area.
This hand-printing technique dates back many centuries. Antique, hand-carved blocks of pear and walnut wood line the walls of Emanuele’s workshop. To create traditional and contemporary designs, Emanuele dips a carved block in rust, places it on the fabric, and lightly taps it with a mallet to leave an imprint. The pillow's elaborate design features a grapevine illustration that dates back to the early 1900s. To fix the color on the fabric, Emanuele uses an antique boiling technique. Here at Antica Stamperia Carpegna time is measured in quality, not in quantity, as each creation is unique.
